The International Day of the Girl Child promotes girls’ rights and highlights gender inequalities that remain between girls and boys. It is a UN observance that is annually held on October 11.

Why is it important?

Equal opportunity for girls is good for all of us.
Girls throughout the world face higher rates of violence, poverty, discrimination. In Canada, girls have higher rates of depression, sexual harassment and dating violence.

There is a growing recognition around the world that support for girls and their basic human rights is key for healthy communities.

Improving girls’ lives has a ripple effect. What is good for them is good for all of us.
This international day will promote equal treatment and opportunities for girls around the world in areas such as law, nutrition, health care, education, training, and freedom from violence and abuse.

Remember all the girls in the world that need love and understanding today. Do your part to raise awareness of the international girl child day

  1. Thank you for posting this very important message Cherokee. As the quote goes ” You educate a girl, you educate a nation”

The one thing that all girls/women have in common regardless of skin colour and nationality, is that we have all been oppressed and discriminated against in one way or another. Women need to support each other and look after our girls.

    • Dear Tarryn:
I just found out about this last night and did feel it was important to make people aware of this. So many girls around the world are mistreated and the world needs to recognize this and start taking some action. I agree women need to support one another and the young girls to give them a better life. Thank you so much for your comment.
      Many blessings, Cherokee Billie
