I am sure you have asked yourself this very question. During my many years in practice,as a Naturopathic Doctor, this is the most frequently asked question. My goal is to bring enlightenment to people so that they can make wise decisions. The media via television, newspapers, magazines and the Internet inundates us with the latest experts’ opinions on what we should consume. We have heard about non-fat diets, low-carb diets, and high protein diets and are left wondering which expert is right. We have tried going on complex carbohydrate regimes or high protein diets. We have tried consuming vitamins.

The food consumed today is pretty much recreational; there is very little nutritional value that is why vitamins have gained so much popularity. One of the reasons natural supplements are needed today is based on the fact that our food no longer contains nutrients. Also due to time and convenience people eat on the run. This makes the need for natural supplements greater. In many years of practice I have found it is sometimes better to give a natural supplement and let a person continue to eat the way they are accustomed to. I find it important to work with the individuals’ lifestyle. Changing a person’s way of life is sometimes far too difficult for that person.

What we perhaps have forgotten in the search for health is getting back to pure whole food. That means food grown in rich soil and not processed in any form. Over 100 years ago people ate whole unprocessed foods. The soil was alive providing foods rich in vitamins and essential minerals. The Creator designed food to maintain and run our bodies effectively. A good example of how maintenance should occur is by using your automobile as an example. To effectively run your automobile you would give it the correct fuel to ensure its performance. You would make sure that it had the correct gas and oil. You would not put in sugar or anything else that would clog the engine and cause it to eventually break down. Yet, every day we start our bodies’ engine without proper fuel and expect it to function to its highest capabilities.

    Thats a really great article Cherokee, very informative. I love fresh healthy food, hate the processed stuff – you really can feel the difference in your body in a few days when eating healthy.

      Eating whole foods is one of the best medicines on this planet. The problem is that food is being genetically modified and it is very difficult to find real food. The synthetics that are placed in animals for mass production causes severe health problems. I’m glad you liked this article.
